What is a blown head gasket? A blown head gasket is a break or failure in the gasket that forms a gas-tight seal between the cylinder head and the engine block. This failure occurs typically in older cars that have experienced severe overheating, or in vehicles that have been rebuilt incorrectly.
What are the symptoms of a blown head gasket? The most visual indication of a blown head gasket is steam (white smoke) coming out of the tail pipe after the car is warm. However, many cars that have minor damage to the gasket may not have visual indications and must be detected by checking the cooling system for exhaust gasses. Other symptoms include loss of water in the radiator, engine overheating and water in the oil. You may find a milky white emulsion first under the oil cap and then on the dip stick.
